Isolation and loneliness are the health epidemics of our time (yes, and COVID).
Even when we may be living in a densely populated metro or urban area, we can feel alone. Men in particular find those first steps to socialise and connect challenging and tend to need a common interest or activity to develop strong and lasting communities (eg. football or BBQs!).
Mr. Perfect itself was started in 2016 with an idea for monthly social BBQs and immediately we faced the question: “How are we practically going to connect men and get them to these BBQs?”
For us, we chose Gumtree and Meetup.com, but there are other websites out there also that can make it easier for us to connect. Here are some ideas:
(1) Meetup.com
As mentioned above, Meetup.com was a revelation for Mr. Perfect when we started and then grew to a handful of BBQ locations.
You can search for common interest groups by location to connect with people physically and online, anything from chess, to technology to sport.
(2) Eventbrite
Although intended primary to advertise paid events, if you have ten minutes to spare to search some keywords on their site, you may well find gatherings that can bring you together with people with similar interests.
(3) MEETin.org
This site has a charming ethos that we at Mr. Perfect try to achieve through an intention for free, grassroots events, “…a word-of-mouth effort to bring people together from all over for fun, low-key events without paying membership fees. MEETin Groups are an example on how the internet can be used as a powerful tool to help make new friends without cost”.
