In times of struggle, when it seems you cannot communicate your pain or you feel no-one else can understand what you are going through, music can be a source of soothing therapy.
But it does not have to be overtly dark or “depressing”, as of course, that is not always helpful.
Here are a few tunes I personally feel helps and recommend you check out:
“Talk To Me” by Brightness
This is a personal favourite of mine, having been sent this by a friend of a friend that had the thoughtfulness to think of me.
Penned by a local Australian artist Alex Knight, it talks of the challenges growing up in a rural town experiencing isolation and needing to talk, “It’s alright, if you don’t know how to do it, come sit down here, talk to me”.
“Hold On” by Alabama Shakes
A cracker of a tune, Brittany Howard’s deep soulful voice takes this song to another level.
The theme and message is simple and clear, with my take-away lyric alluding to self-care: “Bless my heart, bless my soul, didn't think I’d make it to 22 years old”.
“Keep Your Head Up” by Ben Howard
This one came to me by accident, I believe it was on my wife’s playlist and immediately I took to it.
The full lyrics are genius in my opinion and I cannot chose which are my favourite, so check them out here, but the chorus says it all: “Keep your head up, keep your heart strong, keep your mind set in your ways, keep your heart strong”.
