Meet the Board: Gordon Long

Mr. Perfect will be regularly featuring a profile of our Board Members (as well as our BBQ Hosts). These gentlemen have been a big huge part of our foundations, some have been there since the beginning.

Up this week is Gordon Long.

How did you find out about Mr. Perfect?

I applied to get involved with a program called The Growth Project, where business leaders and charity leaders work together for one year. It is sponsored by Commonwealth Bank and some other great organisations. I was buddied up with Terry from Mr Perfect. We hit it off and they later asked me to join the board.

Why did you want to get involved?

I wanted to learn about the not-for-profit space and share my business skills to help the organisation. There is so much more we can do for men in this space.

Favourite memory of a Mr. Perfect Board Meeting?

I remember a very healthy debate about how we select meet up coordinators and new standards we decided to introduce to ensure the wellbeing of our coordinators and attendees.

When you think of Mr. Perfect in 3 years time, what do you visualise?

I hope we having a tangible social impact and we are running hundreds of meet ups in Australia each year and start looking at expanding into New Zealand and beyond.

One piece of advice to a person debating whether to come along to a Meetup BBQ?

I was buddied up with Mr. Perfect through the Growth Project. But coincidently I was actually in a bad place around 7 years ago - divorced, down on my luck, feeling disconnected and heading down a dangerous road.

There are lots of ways disconnection can occur, this was just my situation, although my life is not “perfect” and that’s actually okay, I found opening up honestly to people I loved and building new connections was a critical pillar for happiness for me.

I went to a Mr. Perfect Meetup BBQ last year for the first time, it was simple, with no pressure and I ended up have a couple of great conversations with a few of the guys there and also learnt a couple of new things about myself.
